Beyond G(l)aze

  • Kode Bergen Norway (map)

Beyond G(l)aze aims to give insight into how a selection of Norwegian and Chinese artists transform clay into exiting works of art, and to show the strong position of ceramics in international contemporary art. The featured works represent similarities and differences between two cultured that are often perceived as very different. China’s ceramic tradition dates back several thousand years, whereas Norwegian ceramic history is considerably shorter and simpler. Tradition can signify identity and strength, but it can also increase the pressure of expectation. It can be defied or emphasized, but no matter what, it is there. The exhibition shows how artists with diverse ceramic standpoints choose to meet the challenges posed by clay – technically, artistically, and in terms of craftsmanship – and how their works are reflections of Norwegian and Chinese history and contemporary life.
